Linda Sorensen SCA AFC

It has always been Linda Sorensen’s destiny to become an artist. Mainly self-taught, Linda’s early influences include world renowned wildlife and conservationist Robert Bateman. Linda has lived close to the land in the Algonquin Park region for over 45 years where she took a sabbatical from her work to raise her family as part of the back-to-the-land movement of the 70’s. On returning to her art she has been a prolific award winning professional artist for almost 25 years. Linda’s work reflects her passion for wilderness and wildlife which speaks vibrantly as an advocate for nature. She paints on site in all seasons in oils. Working from her own photography, from wilderness trips she paints large iconic paintings on canvas in the studio and winter months. Linda is an elected member of Society of Canadian Artists and Artists for Conservation. She belongs as a member to East Central Ontario Artists Association. She is also a member of Wild Women, one of three women artists who paint the wilderness. The hardcover book, Wild Women Painters of the Wilderness was published. Linda has been a member of the Madawaska Valley Studio Tour for 20 years. Linda also operates her own studio-gallery, and is open by appointment year round.
Artist Statement
I am a mainly self-taught artist.
I had a fortunate early art influence by my then teacher, and the now internationally renowned wildlife artist and
naturalist Robert Bateman. His teachings on the “Disappearing World” back then have stayed with me to this day,
along with his dedication to Wildlife Conservation through his wildlife paintings.
Over the past 25 years I have developed my own original style of painting. My paintings reflect a passionate
interest in the Natural World and all that it encompasses. My connection to the wilderness has developed over
45 years of living in the Algonquin region where I draw inspiration from the untouched beauty of the landscape. I
enjoy exploring light and shadow and how the drama unfolds; along with wildlife and local heritage buildings that
reflect the history of area.
I paint plein-air in water mixable oils on canvas preferring their versatility to changing outdoor conditions, of sun,
wind, cold and numerous other elements that happen out there on site. I generally try to complete the painting
on site. I use a camera as reference in my wildlife and for larger acrylic studio paintings, these paintings being
different medium offer a different feel to my work. Photography is also a great passion for me.
I have always known that it was my destiny to be an artist. I continue to live my live as an advocate for nature and
close to the land. It is my aspiration to convey my vision of the natural world and its beauty and fragility through
my art. It is my hope to inspire others to respect our Natural World and become stewards of our wilderness and
wildlife habitats.
