PAST EVENTS
Our annual September Workshop where members would join with our sister club, Central Ontario Art Association (COAA) to have a fun weekend long workshop and entertainment has been suspended due to the pandemic.
For many years, our September Workshop was called Geneva Park after the place where the workshops were held. Geneva Park is the name of the YMCA location at 6604 Rama Road on Lake Couchiching near Orillia. Early in 2021 the YMCA announced plans to sell the property.
The two art clubs take turns organizing the event and it is COAA’s turn. They have found a new venue and the workshops are planned for September.

Geneva Park -September 15th-17, 2017
ECOAA members and COAA members every year always look forward to our annual "Paint , Learn and Social" weekend on the shores of Lake Couchiching at the YMCA's Geneva Park Conference Centre. The fall workshop is the combined effort of both organizations with each group alternating in the organization of this grand event that you will not want to miss. This year's 51st Geneva weekend will be organized by ECOAA' s Carolyne Pascoe and Valerie Russell.
Each year, participants choose from professional instructors in their medium of choice; or work independently without instruction, if they prefer. The weekend includes your hotel accommodation, 3 meals a day, all snacks during the day and evening, wine and cheese party on Saturday night and a later-night party if you choose.
This is a social weekend where old friends get together and new friendships are made. Both ECOAA and the COAA hold their Annual General Meetings after dinner on Saturday. There is a "walk-about" to see the works accomplished that day and to meet the other instructors. This is followed by a wine and cheese with entertainment provided by the Geneva Park Players, a group of talented members who entertain the audience with songs and amusing skits which is organized by our own Pauline Holancin. Everyone looks forward to this popular event every year.
If you have never been, it is now the time to come out and enjoy the fellowship of other artists from across Ontario while advancing your art skills. Let's keep this tradition going!

Watercolour:Creating Mood and Mystery in Landscape on Paper and Canvas. Artists in this workshop will learn to paint landscapes in watercolour on paper and canvas that capture the mystery and mood of changing weather incorporating the richness of colour and texture of the changing seasons. Students will also learn a foolproof value plan for atmospheric perspective that will enable them to produce works of high visual impact and greater spatial depth. Colour and expressive brush strokes will also be covered to help you find your own style of landscape painting. A painterly approach best describes Margaret's personal style of picture making. You might say, that it is a blend of impressionism, photo-realism and abstraction.”Rich, vibrant colours and decisive brush strokes characterize Margaret’s paintings". We are very fortunate to have this highly experienced teacher (of 47 years) come and share with us at Geneva Park.

Keith Thirgood MGA, OPAS
Representational and Designed Landscapes, PleinAir and Studio
In this workshop, Keith will demonstrate both in the studio and "en plein air" (weather permitting) Keith will guide participants in developing a loose open style of painting particularly suited for the Canadian Landscape by focusing on the essence of the scene that originally drew your attention, in the first place. Keith will help you to simplify and design your composition to best capture this focus. He will show a step -by -step approach that lays out what to do and when, but allows for individual expression and the development of a personal style. In the studio, you will learn a much reduced palette that allows you to mix any colour imaginable using an easy process and an unique set of pigments.
Keith Thirgood has been described as a Canadian Post-Impressionist. Influenced by van Gogh, the Group of Seven and modern painters like Don Cavin and Mike Svob, Keith attempts to reduce his subjects to bold, simplified shapes. 'My goal in each scene is to find the essence that drew me to paint it in the first place. I believe that to capture what you feel, requires simplification, exaggeration and nerve.' Every year Keith has work in a number of juried shows in Southern Ontario. He is president of OPAS, the Ontario Plein Air Society and runs a number of ongoing workshops and art retreats. He also teaches acrylic painting for beginners and more advanced artists both privately and at various public venues.

Edward Abela- MGA, OPAS
Painting the Canadian Landscape and Scenes from Abroad in Oils (experimenting with cold wax to create texture!) Edward's paintings shine with contrasting colour and wonderful light in the shadows. Ed has painted all around the world and has managed to capture the atmosphere and light that make each location unique in its own light, colour and space. As well as using traditional brush work, Ed will paint in a reductionist style that will help you to capture a clear focus and simplified composition. Ed will also show that you can experiment using cold wax medium to create a wonderful texture using the palette knife. His workshop demos will be in the studio and also outdoors weather permitting. Come and learn from a master painter who has shown his art internationally (Each painter will receive a small folder of information).
Edward has been painting since childhood; whether in Malta, his country of birth or in Canada, or in his travels in Europe or America, Edward has always been seeking to interpret his environment on paper or canvas. I have always sought to interpret my environment on paper or canvas. Like the impressionists, I seek to be a ‘painter of light” and look for beauty in light and shadows and in contrasting colours. Most of my landscapes incorporate this to some degree. If the viewer looking at my work finds this to be pleasing and exciting, I feel I would have achieved my purpose."
His paintings can be found in private homes and offices in Canada, US, England, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong and New Zealand. He has received a number of Awards for his paintings, both in Canada and in Europe. Mainly self taught, he is always looking for opportunities to widen his artistic horizons. He is currently a member of the Markham Group of Artists and the Ontario Plein Air Society . He has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in Canada, England, Germany and Malta.
